Recalls: BMW G05 X5

Overview

Manufacturers, or importers, issue recalls for defects or faults which have the potential to cause injury. Generally, manufacturers will inform the original buyers if their vehicle is subject to a recall and of the steps required to remedy the defect or fault. Please note that the recalls below (if any) are for Australian-delivered vehicles only. Furthermore, the number of recalls should not be taken as an indication of a model’s reliability or its safety more generally.

Recalls: BMW G05 X5

2020 BMW G05 X5: battery fire hazard

In January 2021, recall campaigns 0061650500 and 0061670500 were issued for BMW G05 X5 vehicles that were available for sale in Australia from 29 January 2020 to 18 September 2020. In these vehicles, foreign bodies or particles may have entered the battery cells and could cause a short circuit in a fully charged high-voltage battery. A short circuit could cause a fire, increasing the risk of a collision and injury to vehicle occupants and other road users. For the VINs of the recalled vehicles, please see PRA 2020/18591.

2020 BMW G05 X5: front axle weld and loss of steering

In January 2021, recall campaign 0031020200 was issued for BMW G05 X5 vehicles that were available for sale in Australia from 1 Mary 2020 to 31 October 2020. Due to a fault in the welding process, a weld seam on the front axle was not welded properly. The incorrect welding could lead to complete separation of the right hand side tension strut, resulting in a loss of steering control. Sudden loss of steering control increased the risk of a collision, posing a hazard to vehicle occupants and other road users. For the VINs of the recalled vehicles, please see PRA 2020/18681.

2019-20 BMW G05 X5 and F95 X5 M Wagon: loss of power braking and ABS

In June 2021, recall campaign 00 34 4502 00 was issued for BMW G05 X5 and F95 X5 M vehicles that were available for sale in Australia from 27 July 2019 to 23 November 2020. Due to a manufacturing fault in the hydraulic unit brake booster, panic braking could cause loss of brake power assistance and the Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) without prior warning. Although the electronic brake force distribution function was maintained, the loss of the Anti-lock Braking System may reduce braking performance; this could increase the risk of a collision and injury to vehicle occupants or other road users. For the VINs of the recalled vehicles, please see PRA 2021/18869.

2020 BMW G05 X5 xDrive45e PHEV: potential battery fire

In March 2022, recall campaign 00 61 5706 00 was issued for the 2020 BMW G05 X5 xDrive45e PHEV. Due to a manufacturing defect, the battery did not meet specifications and may experience an electrical short circuit when fully charged; this could result in a fire. A vehicle fire posed a risk of injury to vehicle occupants, bystanders and/or damage to property. When bringing their vehicle to a BMW dealership, owners were advised to have the vehicle with as low a state of charge as possible. For the VINs of the recalled vehicles, please see REC-005071.

2022-24 BMW G05 X5: reduced braking performance; ABS and DSC disabled

In August 2024, recall campaign 0034224983 was issued for 2022-24 BMW G05 X5 vehicles. Due to a manufacturing defect, signal interference may occur within the electronics of the brake system. If this occurred, greater brake pedal force may be required for braking (thereby increasing braking distances), and the Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) and Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) system would not be available. This condition therefore increased the risk of a collision and injury to vehicle occupants, pedestrians, and other road users. If this condition occurred, drivers would be alerted by a brake warning light in the instrument cluster and a message on the central display. Owners were advised that if a warning message appeared, they should follow the instructions and promptly contact their nearest BMW dealer. Furthermore, BMW requested that owners action any Remote Software Update if they received a request on the vehicle’s central display. For the VINs of the recalled vehicles, please see REC-006061.

2022-24 BMW G05 X5: potential loss of power braking, ABS and DSC

In October 2024, recall campaign 0034940200 was issued for 2022-24 BMW G05 X5 vehicles. Due to a manufacturing defect, a component of the brake booster system may have been incorrectly welded and could break. If this occurred, greater pedal force would be required to slow the vehicle and braking distances may increase. Additionally, the Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) and Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) systems may not work – this increased the risk of a collision and injury to vehicle occupants and other road users. If the brake booster system failed, drivers would be alerted by the brake warning light in the instrument cluster, and a message would appear on the central display. For the VINs of the recalled vehicles, please see REC-006090.

2020-23 BMW G05 X5: starter motor could cause fire

In February 2026, recall campaigns 0012650600 and 0012670600 were issued for 2020-23 BMW G05 X5 vehicles. Due to a manufacturing defect, the starter motor solenoid switch could experience increased wear that could cause an internal short circuit. If this occurred, the driver may be unable to start the engine and, at worst, local overheating of the starter motor could lead to a fire while the vehicle was being driven. Both conditions increase the risk of injury to vehicle occupants, while a vehicle fire also posed a risk of damage to property. Until the starter motor was replaced by an authorised BMW dealer, BMW recommended that the vehicle should not be left unattended while the engine was running, and that the Remote Engine Start function should not be used. For the VINs of the recalled vehicles, please see REC-006539.
