Recalls: Honda RD1 CR-V

Overview

Manufacturers, or importers, issue recalls for defects or faults which have the potential to cause injury. Generally, manufacturers will inform the original buyers if their vehicle is subject to a recall and of the steps required to remedy the defect or fault. Please note that the recalls below (if any) are for Australian-delivered vehicles only. Furthermore, the number of recalls should not be taken as an indication of a model’s reliability or its safety more generally.

Recalls: Honda RD1 CR-V

1998-99 Honda RD1 CR-V: ignition switch and engine stall

In May 2002, a recall was issued for 1998 and 1999 Honda CR-V vehicles due to a potential ignition switch malfunction which could result in the engine stalling without warning. This could occur due to a high current surge passing through the ignition switch during the initial start-up phase, causing degradation of the ignition switch contacts (PRA 2002/5400).

1997-00 Honda RD1 CR-V: Takata airbag and buyback

In January 2020, recall campaign 010163 was issued for Honda RD1 CR-V vehicles that were available for sale in Australia prior to 28 February 2000. These recalled vehicles had Takata driver airbags with NADI-5AT inflators and, over time, moisture could enter the airbag inflator and degrade the airbag propellant. If this occurred, deployment of the airbag could cause the airbag inflator housing to rupture and project metal fragments into the vehicle’s cabin – these fragments posed a serious risk of injury and fatality. The airbag could also under-inflate and not protect the driver as intended. Honda Australia advised that owners should stop driving the vehicle immediately and contact Honda to organise an inspection. For affected registered vehicles, Honda would offer to purchase the registered vehicle from the owner at present market value (i.e. as determined by a third party valuer appointed by Honda). Due to the age of the vehicles, replacement airbag inflators were not available. For the VINs of the recalled vehicles, please see PRA 2020/18123.

1996-99 Honda CR-V – grey/private import: Takata NADI 5-AT airbag recall

In December 2024, recall campaign 6NA was issued for 1996-99 Honda CR-V vehicles that were originally supplied to the Australian market under a concessional pathway (also known as grey imports or private imports). The recalled vehicles may be fitted with a Takata NADI 5-AT driver airbag inflator which could allow moisture to enter the unit and degrade the airbag propellant. If this occurred, the propellant may not react as intended when a collision triggers its deployment. Specifically, the airbag inflator could rupture, causing metal fragments to enter the vehicle cabin – these could injure or kill vehicle occupants. Separately, slow airbag deployment may not protect the driver as intended. For the recalled vehicles, owners were advised to stop driving their vehicle until it had been inspected by an Authorised Honda Service Centre. If the vehicle contained a Takata NADI 5-AT driver airbag inflator, it would be replaced. While Honda Australia did not supply these vehicles to the Australian market, Honda Australia decided to rectify these vehicles on behalf of the concessional importers due to the complex nature of an airbag replacement and disposal. For the VINs of the recalled vehicles, please see REC-006208.

Honda RD1 CR-V: rough idle and difficulty starting

In November 2004, Honda USA issued service bulletin 03-038 for 1999-01 Honda CR-V vehicles. In these vehicles, the engine:

  • May idle roughly;
  • Be hard to start;
  • Perform poorly; or
  • Have the malfunction indicator light (MIL) on with diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) P0301, P0302, P0303, P0404 (cylinder misfire) or P0172 (fuel system too rich).

According to the service bulletin, the cause of these symptoms may be one or more exhaust valves having receded into the cylinder head. To fix, the cylinder head had to be replaced.

Problems and faults: Honda RD1 CR-V

  • The ABS light may illuminate because one or both of the rear-wheel speed sensors fails.
  • The fog light housing is prone to cracking – when this occurs, the lens may fall out.
