Recalls: Toyota E100 Corolla
Overview
Manufacturers, or importers, issue recalls for defects or faults which have the potential to cause injury. Generally, manufacturers will inform the original buyers if their vehicle is subject to a recall and of the steps required to remedy the defect or fault. Please note that the recalls below (if any) are for Australian-delivered vehicles only. Furthermore, the number of recalls should not be taken as an indication of a model’s reliability or its safety more generally.
Recalls: Toyota E100 Corolla
1996-99 Toyota Corolla – grey/private import: Takata NADI 5-AT airbag recall
In December 2024, recall campaign 6NA was issued for 1996-99 Toyota Corolla vehicles that were originally supplied to the Australian market under a concessional pathway (also known as grey imports or private imports). The recalled vehicles may be fitted with a Takata NADI 5-AT driver airbag inflator which could allow moisture to enter the unit and degrade the airbag propellant. If this occurred, the propellant may not react as intended when a collision triggers its deployment. Specifically, the airbag inflator could rupture, causing metal fragments to enter the vehicle cabin – these could injure or kill vehicle occupants. Separately, slow airbag deployment may not protect the driver as intended. For the recalled vehicles, owners were advised to stop driving their vehicle until it had been inspected by a Toyota dealer. If the vehicle contained a Takata NADI 5-AT driver airbag inflator, it would be replaced. While Toyota Australia did not supply these vehicles to the Australian market, Toyota Australia decided to rectify these vehicles on behalf of the concessional importers due to the complex nature of an airbag replacement and disposal. Problems and faults: Toyota E100 Corolla
- Squeaking noises from the steering column may be due to dry rubber bushings which require lubrication.
- Water pumps may leak due to a defective seal.
- The windscreen-washer bottles were susceptible to breaking.
