Recalls: Mazda KH CX-60

Mazda KH CX-60: silver front quarterOverview

Recalls are issued for defects or faults which have the potential to cause injury. Manufacturers or importers seek to inform the original buyer if their vehicle is subject to a recall and of the steps required to remedy the defect or fault. However, manufacturers or importers may not have the contact details of subsequent owners. Please note that the recalls below are for Australian-delivered vehicles only. Furthermore, the number of recalls should not be taken as an indication of a model’s reliability or its safety more generally.

2023 Mazda KH CX-60 PHEV: loss of drive/motive power

In November 2023, recall campaign R202302 was issued for 2023 Mazda KH CX-60 PHEV vehicles. Due to a programming issue, the fail-safe driving mode which helped reduce the effects of failure in the vehicle may activate unintentionally, resulting in a loss of motive power. If this occurred while driving, it could increase the risk of a collision and injury to both vehicle occupants and other road users. To fix, the vehicle’s software was to be updated by a Mazda dealer. For the VINs of the recalled vehicles, please see REC-005820.

2023 Mazda KH CX-60: loss of power steering assistance

In January 2024, recall campaign R202401 was issued for 2023 Mazda KH CX-60 vehicles. Due to a manufacturing defect, the gear set within the power steering assembly may not operate as intended. As a result, the driver could experience unexpected increased steering effort. Unexpected increased steering effort, if it occurred whilst driving, could increase the risk of a collision and injury to both vehicle occupants and other road users. For the VINs of the recalled vehicles, please see REC-005882.

2023-24 Mazda KH CX-60 Diesel: no drive when accelerator pedal depressed

In August 2024, recall campaign 202405 was issued for 2023-24 Mazda KH CX-60 vehicles with diesel engines. Due to a software issue in the transmission control module, if the brake pedal was firmly depressed to stop the vehicle, the clutch for the engine and electric motor may remain disengaged during deceleration. If this occurred, power from the engine or electric motor may not be transmitted when the accelerator pedal was depressed. This condition could increase the risk of injury to vehicle occupants and other road users. To fix, a Mazda dealer was to upgrade the calibration for the transmission control module. For the VINs of the recalled vehicles, please see REC-006046.

2023-24 Mazda KH CX-60 PHEV: system malfunctions due to Dash-ESU software

In November 2024, a recall was issued for 2023-24 Mazda KH CX-60 PHEV vehicles. Due to improper software programming of the Dash Electronic Supply Unit (Dash-ESU), multiple warning messages may display in the instrument cluster when the hybrid system was powered on. For example,

  • the engine warning light may illuminate;
  • the instrument cluster may fail to illuminate the seatbelt warnings, and the audible warning may not sound; and
  • the 360 degree view camera may not operate as intended to detect nearby obstacles or driver errors.

Furthermore, the PHEV high-voltage battery cooling system may not operate as intended, such that the Electric Vehicle (EV) drive mode may not be available. A loss of EV drive mode, safety systems and seatbelt warnings could increase the risk of a collision and injury for vehicle occupants and road users. To fix, a Mazda dealer was to update the Dash-ESU software. For the VINs of the recalled vehicles, please see REC-006172.

2023-24 Mazda KH CX-60 Petrol Turbo: system malfunctions due to Dash-ESU software

In November 2024, a recall was issued for 2023-24 Mazda KH CX-60 vehicles with turbocharged petrol engines. Due to a software issue, the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) and Battery Energy Control Module (BECM) may impact the hybrid battery assist function. As a result, the engine may not automatically restart after engine idle stop (Mazda’s “i-stop”). Furthermore, improper software programming of the Dash Electronic Supply Unit (Dash-ESU) could cause multiple warning messages to display in the instrument cluster when the hybrid system was powered on. For example,

  • the engine warning light may illuminate;
  • the instrument cluster may fail to illuminate the seatbelt warnings, and the audible warning may not sound; and
  • the 360 degree view camera may not operate as intended to detect nearby obstacles or driver errors.

If the engine did not restart from i-stop or there was a loss of safety systems and seatbelt warnings, it could increase the risk of a collision and injury to vehicle occupants and other road users. To fix, a Mazda dealer was to update the PCM, BECM and Dash-ESU software with a revised calibration. For the VINs of the recalled vehicles, please see REC-006173.

2023–24 Mazda KH CX-60 Diesel: powertrain and instrument systems software may affect hybrid function

In November 2024, recall campaign REC-006174 was issued for 2023–24 Mazda KH CX-60 Diesel vehicles. Due to a software issue, the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) and Battery Energy Control Module (BECM) may affect the hybrid battery assist function, such that the driver may be unable to restart the engine. Additionally, a software issue with the Dash Electronic Supply Unit (Dash-ESU) may cause the following problems when the hybrid system was powered on:

  • illumination of the engine warning light;
  • the instrument cluster may fail to illuminate the seatbelt warnings, and the audible warning may not sound;
  • the 360 degree view camera may not operate as intended;
  • the clutch connecting the motor and engine may not engage correctly when restarting the engine during EV-driving, requiring the driver to restart the engine by pressing the “start” button; and
  • the engine may restart immediately after the transition from engine-driving to EV-driving.

If the engine did not restart from i-stop and there was a loss of safety systems, the risk of a collision would increase, as would the risk of injury to vehicle occupants and other road users. To fix, the PCM, BECM and Dash-ESU software was to be updated. For the VINs of the recalled vehicles, please see REC-006174.
